Hello listers,
I have finally broken down a brick wall of some 20-odd years' standing re
the origins of my forebear Edward DEANE*, yeoman of Purton, Wilts. His died
at Purton and left a PCC will. At his burial in Purton on 25 May 1776 his
age was given as 67 placing his birth in 1708 or 1709 depending on when in
the year he was born. No baptism for him was found at Purton or vicinity in
North Wilts.
Then on 29 February this year, I looked at the IGI once again and noticed
that there were baptisms for Edward Deane son of John Deane and Thomas Dean
son of John Dean at Tetbury, viz.:

Then I checked the excellent Tetbury website of Elizabeth Janson and found
more information on this Dean(e) family, viz.:

In Tetbury Records, before Dec 31, 1735.
D 566 M 16 Holdings in Tetbury, 1594 Henry Deane list appears to be of land
holders
Mr John Dean of Doughton baptised Edward 1708 11 19 and Thomas 1710 07 26.
Mary Dean was buried 1747 04 03.
This was interesting because it gave a little more detail on Edward and
Thomas's father John, giving his place of residence in Tetbury, and his
status indicator, as Mr, denoting the fact that he was, at least, a parish
notable, to whom the designation Mr was accorded, just as my ancestor Edward
Deane of Purton was called Mr Edward Deane in the Purton registers; a small,
but significant, and, I believed hopeful, indication that I was on the right
track.
Then I tried to find a marriage for John Deane or Dean using the IGI. The
only likely one appeared to be at Cricklade St Sampson parish though the
submission to the IGI was by an LDS patron rather than by extraction, viz.:

Luckily, I had an index copy of the Cricklade St Sampson marriages, so I was
able to confirm these details.
Now I am wondering where the DEANE (DEAN) family hailed from in
Gloucestershire: Was it Bristol or vicinity?
