I recall this being the subject of discussion in RE at my senior school
way back in the 1970s. From that discussion, it's my understanding that
most (all?) of the Christian festivals were borrowed from and (more or
less) coincided with the festivals of other, more prevalent (at the time)
religions. The simple reason being that people seemed reluctant to
convert to a religion that had no festivals and seemed to be a bit dull
by comparison.
