I could not resist posting this here...I found it on a Linconshire Genealogy
list and thought it was fascinating...anyone else had any strange food?

ROOK PIE
I grew up in the village of Wentworth in South Yorkshire, and there were
several large rookeries in the immediate vicinity of the village. 50 to
60 years ago and in the early spring it was standard practice to cull
rooks at about the time the young birds were leaving the nest. In the
extreme austerity of the 1940s, and with meat rationing in force, many
of the village children, me amongst them, were sent out to collect the
freshly dead birds, which, baked in a pie, provided a welcome addition
to the meat ration. I remember the meat as being very dark and strong
tasting - rather like a poor man's venison, but very welcome
nonetheless.
