Dear Ann,

Thank you for your input into Joe Lyons and his connections with Salmon &
Gluckstein. Stupidly, I never looked him up on the Internet, and have been
trying to find out information about him for some time.
It is interesting that this family had tobacco interests. My Grandfather
was a tobacco and fancy goods merchant as was one of his brothers. It must
have been in this line of work that they met.

I have these notes from research into the J Lyons & Co Archive at The London
Metropolitan Archives

Brief History of J Lyons & Co
Mr Montague GLUCKSTEIN, partner and traveller for SALMON & GLUCKSTEIN, a
successful tobacco business, found it difficult to get good quality
refreshments on his travels, except in public houses. He decided to start a
firm to provide such facilities but did not wish to use the name Salmon &
Gluckstein, known for tobacco. In 1886, with his brother Isodore, they got
together with Joseph Lyons, a distant relative, who had experience of
catering at large exhibitions that were all the fashion then. They named the
firm J Lyons but the Glucksteins controlled it. They started off at these
exhibitions and other bit events, moving to fixed premises later.

Joseph Lyons was the sone of Nathaniel LYONS and Hannah COHEN. he was born
Kennington 1855 of Irish-Jewish parents. He attended the Borough Jewish
School, Kennington. He married Sarah Psyche COHEN 24 Aug 1881
