Hello,
I sent an e-mail enquiry to the National Archive of Canada on Jan5/98, and
on Mar25/98, received a copy of my father's Juvenile Inspection Report
(which is a record of where he was placed in Canada) and a letter saying
what ship he arrived on and when. I don't remember what I said in the
e-mail; must have found the address on the site. The only information I had
was the year he arrived, where he landed and his name.
My father was 14 when he left London on Sept 18, 1924 and landed at Quebec
on Sept 26. 1924 aboard the SS MELITA. He was transferred (by train, I'll
assume) to Barnardo's home on Jarvis St in Toronto and then placed, Jan 29,
1925 in a home in Creemore, Ontario; the first of many.... My father wasn't
in Barnardos' care until the day he sailed. He was raised in an orphanage
"The Foundling Hospital" in London, and children who went to Canada were
transferred to Barnardo's. Perhaps other children from local, vs
international organizations came via Barnardo's.
