Thanks to Jan who assisted me. I now know that there was an orphanage
in Painswick (Washwell House). Evidently run by Gyde Charities. I do
not know what the connection is between Gyde Charities and the Ms.
Wemyss found in the 1881 census. Ms. Wemyss took/sent several groups of
children to Canada - I do not know who she was employed by (maybe Gyde
Charities, maybe Annie Macpherson???)

Does anyone have any information on Gyde Charities? Or where I might
obtain?

I found online (thanks to Jan) at the Historical Manuscripts Commission
"1865-1987: Minutes, accounts, applications for assistance, register of
inmates of almhouse, record rel to buildings, corresp. and misc. papers"
Ref. D7137; also found "1873-1951: Records. Ref. D2415.
Unfortunately, I do not know how to obtain a copy to read or what to do
next. Any suggestions?

Again, according to my grandfather's Marchmont records, there are 2
notations as to where he was from: "from Painswick" also "from
Cuckfield" - no other explanation.
