Hello Listers:
While doing research today at the Grenville County Historical Society Resource Center, I came across this item in the minutes of the "Leeds & Grenville Counties Council held January 28---Feb. 1, 1896"..........
"A petition was passed, addressed to the House of Commons of the Dominion of Canada, asking that the Government Bonus in aid of immigration of pauper children be discontinued. That such legislative measures be enacted as shall compel all societies or organizations for the immigration of pauper children into Canada, to retake and keep at the expense of said organization any of such children under the age of 18 years, who may be proved to be physically incapable of work or worthless or criminal and that such societies or organizations be required to guarantee all expenses to which Municipalities may be put by such criminal or useless immigrants. That there be a proper governmental supervision established over every child placed out on a community by said Immigration agencies or societies or otherwise."
