Dear Listers:
I have a couple of questions after having read the e-mails I received today from this list.
Firstly, Muriel Davidson wrote: "Surnames were changed according to the surname of the "adoptive" family -- only by combining church and census records, is one able to learn which are the natural children." Was it common then for the home child to take on the "adoptive" family's name. One of my great aunts believes that is how her mother came by her Lindsay surname, but her birth certificate that she received from Glasgow, Scotland, lists her surname as Lindsay. In the 1891 census in Ontario, she is with the Miller family and she is listed as Lindsay, so I don't think she changed her name. She came over with the Quarriers organization. Could it have been Barnardos or another organization that required the "adoption" process?
Secondly, someone else mentioned receiving information from the National Archives of Canada. Does anyone know if they have records regarding the placement of Quarriers children in Canada? I thought they could only be of help with regard to shipping records.
Briefly, I will re-post my interest. My great grandmother, Jessie Drummond Lindsay, was a Quarriers child. She was born in Glasgow in 1881 and placed with the Quarriers organization in February 1884. In June 1884 she was shipped to Canada, at the age of 3.
Sincerely,
Tammy Guldbransen
