Several have written to state this is exactly what happened -- the
child "did not take" the adoptive surname, but rather was given it
by the family. My method of combining census and church records
has worked in several cases.

Was it common then for the home child to take on the "adoptive" family's name. One of my great aunts believes that is how her mother came by her Lindsay surname, but her birth certificate that she received from Glasgow, Scotland, lists her surname as Lindsay. In the 1891 census in Ontario, she is with the Miller family and she is listed as Lindsay, so I don't think she changed her name. She came over with the Quarriers organization. Could it have been Barnardos or another organization that required the "adoption" process?
