Subject: [Brown-NY] Peter Brown brother of my Caleb Jr???
Date: Sun, 16 Feb 2003 14:24:55 EST
Breakthrough: or at least I think it is!!
Old clues written as notes on a FTM my sister had, said that our Caleb Brown
Jr (b 1753 Stephentown, Albany later Rensselaer County, NY) had a brother
named Peter.
Since Caleb SR is the ancestor whose birthplace we haven't yet found, I
thought I'd see if Caleb and Peter could conceivably be brothers.
Look like it.
In the 1790 Fed. Census for Stephentown, Albany (didn't become Rensselaer
County till 1791), Peter Brown's name is right above Caleb Jr's name. They
may have lived next door?? The coincidence is too good to ignore.
Caleb Jr died in 1817. From the abstract of his will it says his wife was
Mary, which makes sense, as Sarah Elwell, the wife with whom he had the 3
chilldren) didn't quite make it to 30 years of age). On this will abstract
it only lists the 3 children he had with Sarah, so maybe he and Mary had no
offspring. (Kinda wish they had; that way there would be more descendants to
help.)
Peter died in Nassau, Rensselaer, NY in 1835. His wfe's name was Mary as
well. (WHY oh why couldn't they have inc her surname???) Anyway, they had
three children, dau Polly who was m to Bernard HICKS. Two sons, Peter Jr and
David, who it says on the abstract were "upwards of 40 years of age."
Executors of his will were: son David and son-in-law Bernard Hicks.
It would be wonderful if I could find a descendant of Peter's (or Peter Jr or
his bro David, or someone who has Polly Brown and Bernard Hicks in their
line.) I need more people beating the bush with me to uncover where Caleb SR
was born. RI??? Don't know; that's what family tradition says, but you know
how many Browns were in RI? Ever hear of Brown University? Yikes!!!
Cheers, Coralynn
