Subject: The Brown Surname's Diverse Origins
Date: Sun, 7 Aug 2005 12:01:35 EDT

It's long been commonplace knowledge that our "Brown" surname
arose independently in many separate places, with no particular
relationship between one Brown family and the next.

Most of us have probably never imagined just how diverse those
origins must have been. But some important clues are now emerging
from the Brown/Browne/Braun DNA Study.

This project now has DNA results for 152 "biological Browns" -- that
is, men either (a) who carry the Brown surname themselves or (b) who
descend in an unbroken male-to-male line from a Brown-surnamed
male ancestor.

Among these 152 participants, 77 men have to date found matches
with another project member. The latter 77 fall into 29 distinct groups
that appear to share recent common ancestry, while another 75 project
members have yet to find a match.

To see these results, please visit our project website at:

The bottom line for all these numbers is that the Brown DNA Study
has now identified 104 UNRELATED Brown family lines -- and yet we
have so far tested only 152 out of the estimated two to three million
Brown-surnamed men in the English-speaking world!

Moreover, since our project is still growing, the identifiable number of
unrelated Brown/Browne/Braun lines is bound to increase substantially
in future years. I certainly wouldn't want to take any bets as to what the
final total might be!

Comments and questions always appreciated.
