Good Morning, Julie:

Meant to send this file off to you on Friday, but my contractors showed =
up to install our new windows and I got sidetracked. However, I'm =
attaching the file in response to your request for information on =
Charles B. Brown of Bath, ME. This information was extracted from an =
unpublished, handwritten manuscript by Alfred T. Holt (still living) and =
this is the source that provided me with the linkup to my perplexing =
problem of locating my direct ancestors for DAR membership. I have =
nothing but high praise for the work Mr. Holt is attempting and have =
offered my assistance to him many times. If you ever get to Bath, do =
visit the Patten Free Library's History Room - it is really a treasure =
trove.

I am sending this out to the Brown list just in case there is someone =
else out there who would like to have this information for their own =
research. =20

Good luck in your research, Julie, and if I can be of any further help =
to you, just ask.

Hi Arlene,=20

Thank you very much for your help. It means alot to me. I have talked =
with
my dad about the info that you have given me so far and he is very =
excited
about it. I would be very greatful for any more info that you could give
me.

Maybe one of these days real soon I can get a chance to go to Bath and
visit the library myself. I would like to do research on more of my =
family.
I have gotten a bit further thanks to you and a few other people who =
have
offered some information. I greatly appreciate any help that I can get =
at
this point. I am still learning how to research my family tree. I just =
hope
that I am able to help others one day soon.

Thank you again for all your help. I will be in touch again.

Sincerely,=20

Julie

Research on Charles B. Brown of Bath, Maine conducted 28 January 1998 by =
Arlene L. Brown
Ackermann () at the request ofJulie Brown =
() - Information provided has
been extracted explicitly from an unpublished, handwritten manuscript by =
Alfred T. Holt, "The Bath 15
Families." This manuscript resides only at the Patten Free Library in =
Bath, ME. I have extracted this
information from the pages entitled BROWN-4, BROWN-5, BROWN-6, and =
BROWN-7, Family #B:

Preface to The Bath 15 Families

Interspersed in alphabetic order in Henry Owen's "Families Allied to the =
Owen Family" will be 15 family
studies starting with the 1983 composition of the Fisher family. This =
family by chance was very easy and
gave us encouragement to proceed in collecting data for the rest.

The purpose of the entire collection, with the inclusion of H. Owen's =
"Families ...," is to soundly establish
these families in Bath in the XIXth Century. The family - not the =
individual - is what we are concerned
with. It has not been within the scope of these studies to trace the =
origins nor the migrations of the
people.

The chief negative criticism of this work will be its superficiality, we =
think. And we agree. We are sorry
that we don't have the time/money to do a thorough work on each family - =
there are 40 more families
which we want to cover in the next decade.

Another objection to our work is the lack of negative data. It would be =
greatly helpful to future
genealogists to know what has been searched to no avail. But to make a =
statement of this nature
meaningful, we should be truly competent "searchers," and that we are =
not.

The 15 families were selected because there was evidence of significant =
property holdings in Bath, and
they were from F to L alphabetically - the names from from H. Owen's =
genealogical scraps. These
families are: Fisher, Foote, Foster, Gardiner, Hall, Henry, Hodgkins, =
Kimball, Lambard (Lambert,
Lombard, etc), Larrabee, Ledyard, Lemont, Lincoln, Loring, and Lowell.

The material has been gathered from the following sources

(1) Vital Records. The Georgetown, Phippsburg, and Topsham records are =
printed. Extractions of the
Vrs and in Mrs. Snowe's "Pioneers of Georgetown Families," in Mrs. =
Potter's "Arrowsic Family Records,"
and in Dr. Buck's "Woolwich Notes." The Arrowsic, West Bath, and =
Woolwich records were culled for any
mention of the 15 names. The Brunswick records were not searched. =
Three points about the Bath
records should be made: (a) most of the records were destroyed by fire =
in 1837, (b) there are five volumes
of marriages and intentions that are just now being cross-indexed for =
brides and grooms, and (c) the
amount of information in the records after 1892 is a great deal more =
than before.

(2) Church Records. Except for the early Winter Street Church records, =
which are incorporated in the
Bath Vital Records, I have not found any church records of much use. It =
is regretable that the Elm Street
Baptist Church records are lost.

(3) Cemetery Records. The cemetery office in Bath has an excellent =
file. The Patten Free Library has a
large collection of markings from the surrounding towns. The number of =
unmarked gravesites is high.

(4) Probate Files. The probate files of Lincoln County (to 1854) and =
Sagadahoc County (1854 into the
early XXth Century) were surveyed fairly thoroughly, but the deeds have =
only been searched for certain
names - and then rather hurriedly.

(5) An attempt has been made to find material about the 15 families in =
the Maine State Library and the
Maine Historical Society Library. Except for some published family =
genealogies, we have been
disappointed. More work of this nature should be done at the Essex =
Institute Library and the New England
Historical and Genealogical Society Library.

(6) We have sought, and are seeking, manuscript work locally, and have =
advertised in the Connecticut
Genealogical Society journal. The latter course would seem to be a =
waste of time; but I think there must
be much more material in town. For instance, the archives in the Maine =
Maritime Museum have not been
surveyed.

(7) There are four special sources in the Lincoln County courthouse that =
have been used: (a) a file of
Revolutionary War pension papers, (b) a marriage index - this is indexed =
only for the groom's name and
depended on the town clerk sending in the data, (c) the Common Plea =
Docket books - each volume is
indexed separately - valuable material has been found, but rarely, and =
(d) the divorce file.

(8) An interesting source that I discovered was the Tax and Assessment =
records of Bath. These
undoubtedly should be carefully studied and summarized, but is is a very =
special task. The assessment
books for 1830-31, 1838, and 1852, and the tax lists for 1831-38, 1840, =
1846-8, and 1850 have been
found.

(9) All the Bath school records seem to have been destroyed or lost.

(10) A unique work by Doris Rowland nd Helen McPhee (deceased 1983) is =
the Newspaper Index in the
Patton Free Library. This gives genealogical data found in the =
newspapers of the XIXth Century.

(11) The U.S. Censuses are very important, and the Patton Free Library =
now has microfilm copies of the
1850-80 and the 1810 censuses of the towns in Sagadahoc County. Only =
rarely did I study the earlier
censuses, which are in the Maine State Archives.

(12) What can be a fine source, the newspaper obituary, began to appear =
in our papers in the mid 1890s.=20
Fortunately, the Patton Free Library has the Bath Times on microfilm and =
bound volumes of the Bath
Independent.

(13) I have just found another source: the divorce fil in the office of =
the Superior Court in Bath.
