Anderson Man Killed, Three Hurt in Wreck

Car Goes Over Bank Near Ingot Sunday
On Alturas HighWay
___________________________________
When the machine he was driving plunged 50 feet over an embankment on the
Alturas road a mile west of Ingot Sunday night at 11 o'clock Clare Allen
Brown,49 of Anderson was crushed and instantly killed and three of his four
passengers were injured. The entire party was returning to their homes in
Anderson after attending the Burney Rodeo.
Those injured were: Mrs. Norene Lillard, possible broken shoulder, cuts and
bruises; Miss Mabel Brown, sister of the deceased, cuts and bruises and
Raymond Phelps, cuts and bruises.
Glenn Spoon was the only passenger not injured.
Lost Control
The car was coming west when apparently as a result of a blown out left front
tire Brown lost control at the top of the hill after crossing Seamon's Gulch.
First, the machine went to the left of the pavement and then cut back sharply
to the right, plunging over the 50 foot embankment. It ended up with being
thrown bottom up into a large tree, then fell back.
Brown was thrown from the machine with the impact, and the vehicle fell back
onto him, crushing him.
A neighbor telephoned Traffic Officers John Desmond and E.F. Jones, who went
to the scene, together with coroner Roy S. Duggins. It necessary for a tow
car to move the machine before Brown's body could be extricated.
An ambulance was summoned and the three injured persons were taken to the
county hospital for treatment. It is not believed the condition of any of
them is serious.
Brown was born July 17, 1890 in Cottonwood. He is survived by two brothers,
C.F. Brown, and Benjamin Brown.
