The 39th Kentucky Mounted Infantry was recruited in the Fall of 1862 from the
counties in Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia which lie within the Big
Sandy Valley. The regiment was mustered into the service of the United States
Army on February 16th, 1863, having already been engaged in a number of
battles and skirmishes before this date. The unit was tasked with the
protection of the area against regular Confederate troops as well as from the
armed bands of lawless men, deserters, thieves, and murderers.
