<< My Brown Family list >>

Does this line look familiar to anyone?

My Caleb Brown was b 1753 in Stephentown, Albany County (later Rensselaer
County as of 1791) NY. m Sarah Elwell.
His father is Caleb Sr., but just which state (RI? MA?) he migrated from is
still unclear. Family tradition has it he came from RI. I have yet to find
any sources for this however.
In the 1790 Fed. census for Stephentown, they list Caleb Sr., Caleb Jr. and
Peter.
Caleb Jr. was supposed to have had a brother named Peter. (no solid source
for this information).......but.....on the 1790 census Peter and Caleb Jr's
listings are right next to each other, making me suspect they may have lived
in adjoining properties.
In "Abstracts of wills of Rensselaer County, New York" (in office of
surrogate at Troy, NY) the wills of Caleb Jr. and of Peter Brown are found.
It looks like Caleb Jr died in 1817 and Peter in 1835. Peter names as wife:
Mary (sometimes named Polly. Why these names were interchangable escapes me,
but oft time they were). Peter lists sons: Peter Jr. and David "now upwards
of 40 years of age." His son-in-law was named Bernard Hicks, m to Peter's
dau Polly. (or Mary?)
Caleb Jr's children were:
John C. Brown b 6/24/1781 in Stephentown, d. 8/29/1835 Greig, Lewis, NY. (m
Zada Mead).
Mercy Brown, b 2/16/1779
Elenor Brown, b 12/27/1783

I'm hoping that if no one has a Caleb in their lineage, perhaps they have
Peter. If I could break down the brickwall to Caleb Sr., it might (?) be
clear sailing from there on back.
Cheers,
Coralynn B.
