The Pendleton District was in South Carolina. It is now
three counties (Anderson, Pickens and Oconee) in the
west ("Upstate").
William, his wife, and their kids left North Carolina for
what's now Upstate South Carolina apparently due
to one of the Cherokee wars. In the mid-1770s,
the British were working with the tribes as
well as fighting their former colonists on
the battlefield.
