Celia, Yes, I've come across 'Major' used as a forename in my MERRY ONS.

Whenever I have a question like this, I go to www.familysearch.org and do a
search on (forename) SMITH. In this case, first name Major, last name
SMITH. There were 127 hits. A quick scan showed most, in not all, were
births or baptisms.
