HONOURED BY KING.
A Pretoria message says that the King has appointed Temporary Colonel Clarence Selwyn SMITH, of Port Elizabeth, a South African officer seconded to the British Forces, to be an officer of the Military Division of the Order of the British Empire, in recognition of “gallant and distinguished services in North West, Europe.”
Colonel SMITH is serving with the Allied Military Government in Holland and recently he was mentioned in dispatches in connection with his work on behalf of Amgot.
ENGAGEMENTS.
SARSON. – BOONZAAIER. The engagement is announced between Edith, twin daughter of Mr and Mrs W.J. SARSON, of Port Elizabeth, and Mathys (Bonzo), eldest son of Mr and Mrs N.J. BOONZAAIER, of Piquetberg.
SHELVER. – GREYLING. The engagement has been announced of Jacomina (Joey), daughter of Mr and Mrs GREYLING, Burgershof, Cookhouse, and Walter, son of Mrs KUMM and the late Mr SHELVER, of Butterworth.
MARRIED.
BAINES. – NEWCOMBE. Married on August 4th, by Special Licence, Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs NEWCOMBE, of Port Elizabeth, to Johannes BAINES, second eldest son of Mr BAINES and the late Mrs BAINES, of Port Elizabeth.
DEATHS.
ANDERSON. – Charles, passed away at Port Elizabeth, on the 5th August, 1945, in his 70th year. Service in Jones and Rice Chapel, 43 Russell Road, this (Monday) morning at 11 o’clock, thence the funeral will proceed to the South End Cemetery.
BARROW. – Mary Elizabeth, passed away at the Provincial Hospital on the 4th August, 1945, mother of Winifred Innocent, in her 68th year. Service in Jones and Rice Chapel, 43 Russell Road, this (Monday) afternoon at 2.30 o’clock, thence the funeral will proceed to the South End Cemetery.
GARACH. – Keshavlal (Rip), of Graaff Reinet passed away on the 31st July, 1945. Cremated on the same day.
HART. – Charlotte, passed away at 7 Emanuel Street, on the 4th August, 1945, at the age of 46 years. Service at the above address this (Monday) afternoon at 2.30 o’clock, thence the funeral will proceed to the North End Cemetery.
McPHERSON. – Robert Sutherland, passed away on the 4th August, 1945.
MORE. – Thomas, husband of Hilda MORE, passed away at 71 Webber Street, Port Elizabeth, on the 5th August, 1945. Age 66 years. Service at St Saviour’s Church, Walmer, this (Monday) afternoon at 3.30 o’clock, thence the funeral will proceed to the South End Cemetery.
SINGH. – Arumugum, passed away at 20 Walmer Road, on the 5th August, 1945, age 22 years. Funeral will leave the above address this (Monday) afternoon at 4.30 o’clock, for South End Cemetery.

ASHBURNER. – Errol Forbes (Tiny) S.A.A.F., ACCIDENTLY KILLED AT Bloemfontein on 6th August, 1943. Remembered by Mom, Ruby and Andrew.
