The latest disasters have brought many pictures of people searching through
the debris for precious items. My most precious items are the pictures of
my family, some dating back as far as 1850s. My next most precious item is
the genealogy database. I constantly harp on backing up your genealogy
information. You should copy it, keep a copy where you can use it in case
of computer problems and send another copy to another city where there is
little chance that a disaster will hit both places. You should do the same
with your pictures.
It is relatively easy to copy your entire folder of pictures (My Pictures).
Computer programs differ but you can usually do it by going to My computer
and clicking on the C drive. In there you should find My documents and in
the My documents folder you should see a folder for My pictures. Pictures
take up a lot of room so you may not be able to copy the entire folder on
one floppy disk. Most of the new computers have the ability to burn a CD.
Use this by right clicking on the My pictures folder and sending it to the
drive that is the CD rom drive (usually D drive but not always). You would
do the same thing to put it on a floppy by indicating it should go to the A
drive.
Once you have copied the pictures, you should check to be sure they have
been copied. Put the disk or diskette into the computer and then click on
that. Be sure to double click the folder to see if the pictures copied and
you do not have an empty folder.
I look at my belongings and think everything can be replaced except the
pictures and the genealogy database. While I would be sorry to lose things
that my children made or people gave to me as gifts, they are only things.
People are more important and pictures are all I have of those that have
passed on. I keep my favorite pictures on my bedroom wall and they are the
first and last things I see each day. They are all copied onto a disk and
at my daughter's house in Colorado. It is not likely that both Denver and
Tucson will be hit by the same disaster. If something happens to one of our
homes, the other one should be ok.
I just saw a young girl wearing a pin with a picture of her ggg-aunt in it.
The aunt had raised the children after the mother's death so everyone knew
her as mama and grandma. The aunt died in 1906. The picture was taken in
about 1883. We don't know when the pin was made but it is quite old. I
have a 5 generation picture of my mother, myself, my daughter, her son and
his daughter. That grandson died last year. The 5 generation picture was
put on a pin when it was taken. That pin is a most precious item. I just
had another 4 generation picture taken with another daughter and her
daughter and new baby boy. We are going to do the same with one of those
pictures. Nice keepsakes. I have a 5 generation picture of me as a little
girl with my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and
great-great-grandmother. I would hate to lose it.
Several people have sent me pictures of their ancestors which I have in the
Bunker database. I am always happy to copy those to send to other
descendants.
