From Burnett Family Ancestry
per John H Burnett, Lord of Normanton on Soar. President BFA.
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Some Burnett Branches from Virginia and Kentucky claim unproven descent
from The House of Leys.
The basis of previous prime research seems to be two printed genealogical
theories and several unprinted sosurces.
(a) Burnett, Baker, Beaman and related families produced in 1978
(hereafter
BBB)and
(b) The Burnett Family by Charles Howard Burnett , 1950.(hereafter CHB).
BBB states " George Burnett who came from Scotland by way of England to
Ireland to America in 1755 when he was 60-70 years of age. He was the
son
of Thomas Burnett m Mary Blakeley.
George Burnett settled in Halifax, Virginia .....m(arried) Margaret
Cunningham
dau George Randolph Cunningham.........George Burnett
came to America with five grown children:
Henry Burnett believed born Ireland..............(married Elizabeth
(Graham) Shields 10 5 1780
James Burnett beleived born Ireland.............(married Watson / Mary
Morrison)
Sarah Burnett belived born Ireland ...............(married John Mack)
Mary Burnett belived born Ireland ................(married George Hawkins)
Gilbert Burnett belived born Ireland ..............(married 9 children
died 1817)""
CHB states " Thomas Burnett married Margaret Blakeley and is thought to be
the father of six children who emigrated to Virginia.::
James Burnett died 1797 m(arried) Watson / Mary Morrison and Margaret
Robinson
Henry Burnett (married Mrs Elizabeth Shields)
George Burnett born 1752 Emigrated to Virginia 1755 married Margaret
Cunningham dau George Randolph Cunningham
Gilbert Burnett d 1817 m(arried) Margaret Cunningham
Sarah Burnett m(arried) John Mack
Mary Burnett m(arried George Hawkins)"
=====================================================================
So immediately we have a problem: BBB thinks that George Burnett was the
father of Henry, James, Sarah, Mary and Gilbert. CHB thinks that they
are all siblings (including > George) of Thomas Burnett and Margaret (or
Mary) Blakeley.
Many source think that George was 60-70 years of age when he arrived in >
Viginia in 1755.
CHB quotes he is born 1752. Some quote that George was the George baptised
28th July 1689 at South Leith Midlothian = if so that would make his
parents George Burnet and Catharine Donaldson.
Others quote that George died and his wife Margaret Cunningham went on to
marry Georges's brother Gilbert and had a further 9 children! - in this
respect there is a will proved 16 October 1797 in Virginia of Thomas
Cunningham
who denotes his daughter as "Peggy Burnett" and one of the executors of
the will is
Gilbert Burnett, perhaps this indicates that Gilbert married a different
Margaret
Cunningham the daughter of Thomas. (Interestingly the will is witnessed
by a Robert Mack)
Some state that George Burnett was "transported" from Aberdeen in the
early
1750s there is no criminal record that seems to support this, it is
futher quoted that a Margaret Burnett (Cunningham) related to George
(either wife,
daughter, granddaughter or neice) was transported from Aberdeen in about
1755 for infanticide,
we are currently obtaining the various munuments to establish the accused,
details
of the crime, punishment, transportation, and relationship hopefully to
settle this
matter one way or another.
So far from close examination there is no evidence to substantiate or deny
any of the above very conflicting data, research so far would indicate
that this family originated not from England or Scotland but from Ireland.
Has anyone any proveable documentary source that may throw light on this
matter ??
