Mary Carolyn, I've contacted 3 of my BURNETT cousins to see if any of them might be
interested in this project. The oldest living BURNETT relative I have is my uncle who
just turned 84 on March 17th.

Subject: [[BURNETT ]] Burnett DNA project
Would anyone out there be interested in participating in a BURNETT DNA
project?
Recently, while looking around the Family Tree DNA site, I noticed that
there is a DNA project already going on for the surname BARNETT.
Interestingly enough, the name Burnett is listed as one of the names
included in the Barnett project, prompting me to remember something June
Bork once told me: "Most Barnetts were really Burnetts." Anyone who
has done much digging in the old handwritten records knows that a poorly
closed "a" can easily be taken for a "u." My Burnett
great-grandfather's name on his marriage record looks like Bennett!
We would have the option of participating in the ongoing Barnett
project, or we could form a Burnett one if one of our members would take
it on. Family Tree DNA is one of the most popular DNA labs for surname
projects and is used by several other surname mailing lists I am on. I
am not an expert on DNA; so I refer you to this company's web site for
info on types of tests, privacy, pricing, and FAQs. Participating in a
group entitles you to a group rate which saves about around $60 on tests.

Participating in a surname project is easy and painless. First, you
order a testing kit from Family Tree DNA. When it comes, you must
follow the directions carefully on getting the sample and sending it
in. You obtain your DNA sample by running a swab on the inside your
mouth, against your cheek. It doesn't hurt!
For the purposes of surname testing, we will need Burnett males who
carry BOTH the Burnett name AND the Burnett blood line -- not males who
have been adopted. The DNA information for surname genealogical uses is
on the male "Y" chromosome; that's why women can't participate in this
particular test.
For my family group, my only male Burnett cousin has thankfully agreed
to be tested. We can trace our branch to the 1840s in Spartanburg, SC,
but cannot, based on the existing records, actually hook into any known
families there. We need DNA help to find the connection, if any!
In order for this project to be a success, we will need to get as many
Burnetts as possible to participate in the DNA project. I know you are
out there! Please post your willingness to participate in this DNA
project by sending an e-mail message to the list so that everyone will
know if there is any interest in this endeavor.
