Thought I'd check out this mailing list. One of the things we've been
wondering about is the name of the supposed daughter of William Burt Sr.
of Halifax County who married a Carstaphane (since his will names a
granddaughter Sophia Carstaphane).

This unnamed daughter allegedly married Orren Carstapane:
"Carstarphen, Orren (son of James) to ___, dau of William Burt, Sr.
(the author cites Halifax will books 3:570 and 3:695, 1824)

Question: Could one of you who has a copy of the will abstracts
(Bobbie, I think that's you?) verify that these wills confirm the
statement above?

Assuming that the above information is correct, I found the following
deed of interest:
Halifax Co., NC Deed Book 24, p. 519 (from Stephen Bradley's
abstracts):
Nov Ct 1818 Rhesa Read had petitioned to have the lands of Martha
Carstarphen dec'd devided among Rhesa Read and his wife Nancy dec'd,
Thomas C. Carstarphen, Orrin Carstarphen and his wife Elizabeth,
James Carstarpehn, Joseph J. Carstarphen, Sarah R. Carstarphen,
and William Carstarphen... (I'll stop here, you can have the
whole abstract if you want it).

The point here is Oren Carstaphane's wife is named as Elizabeth. I sure
hope that William Burt Sr's daughter was deceased by then and he had
remarried, or I am really confused: we know that William Burt Sr.
already had a daughter Elizabeth who married Zacheus Burt. Any ideas? As
best I can tell, there was only one Oren D. Carstaphane [also found a
Carstaphane web site that seems to confirm just one Oren but they had no
further information on his wife other than that she was a Burt and that
her father was William B. Burt - no reference cited].

This Oren D[atus] Carstaphane is later found in Putnam County, Georgia.
Some of his daughter Sophia Carstaphne Neville's descendants ended up in
Wilcox Co., Alabama [from the Carstaphane web site - see
http://www.edwards1.com/rose/genealogy/html/d0002/g0000023.htm#I575 if
you want details]. I suggested that John contact Rose Edwards to see if
we could learn more [Carstaphanes also married into the Reads in Halifax
County which is of interest to those of us descended from Joseph Burt
and Ann Reed).
