Hi all,

Ed Butler's question about James Don Butler who arrived as a convict 1796 prompts me to share some information I only recently discovered.

NSW Records, previously known as NSW Archives, has a site that provides magnificent information about people who had dealings with government between 1788 and 1825. The Colonial Secretary was involved in all sorts of matters, convicts applying for permission to marry, people wanting denization so they could buy land, applications for tickets of leave, applications to have wives brought to Australia, ...to name but a few of his functions.

Some years ago, NSW State Records indexed all Colonial Secretary correspondence in those years. Most significantly, they grouped it so users can see all correspondence from/to a particular person. For example, there were several James Butler s here in those years and each person has his own list of correspondence.

Look at www.records.nsw.gov.au or www.records.nsw.gov.au/publications/colsec/default.htm It is great.

There is also an index for other time periods but users will have to decide whether the record applies to their person.

Unfortunately, I haven't found any of mine.
