Lynn:

An e-mail that I received just last evening with details of a New York City
directory could certainly be relevant:

1850-1851 City Directory--

Joseph Butler - dealer in commercial merchandise at 118 South Street
- resides at Williamsburg (a New York suburb??)
William L. M. - commercial merchadise at 12 Front Street
- resides in Brooklyn

1851-1852 City Directory--

Joseph Butler - dealer in commercial merchandise at 118 South Street
William L. M. - missing from directory (for this period and thereafter)
Frederick - commercial merchant at 118 South Street
- resides at Williamsburg
Butler Brothers - Merchants at 118 South Street

In reviewing my LDG IGI records I noted in the summary of logical brothers
and sisters of William was a Frederick christened on Dec 27 1829 in Saint
Leonards, Shoreditch, London which was the adjoining parish that William (my
GGFather ...perhaps) was christened in and which would make him about 21
years of age in 1850. Would be interesting to see if the 1850 census gives
the age of the Frederick mentioned above. Wouldn't that be exciting if there
was a match!!

The story is that my GGFather William was sent with a few brothers to New
York to open a branch of a family business (perhaps related to importing
glassware or flatware). That these three people may have been related
somehow since they were all listed as being in the "commercial merchandise"
business. However, on the other hand that may quite a "leap" since the
William L. M. was reported as being in both a different business and
residence locations. I suspect the only way I could ever narrow in on the
correct William would be to check each reference on the 1850 Census to see if
there is one who was about 32 years of age. Don't know if your NY records
contain that info or not but if one could be found a City Directory
comparison would probably be quite revealing. What do you think?

Thank you for your interest in this most difficult case. Please send me your
