Jenny:
I believe all Irish BUTLERs share a common heritage from Theobold
FITZWALTER, the Anglo-Norman appointed Chief Butler of Ireland by Henry II
in 1172. Unfortunately, a scarcity of records makes it impossible to prove.
My father and at least 2 generations before were born in Co. Kilkenny, where
BUTLER is about as common as SMITH in this country.
You probably need contact with BUTLERs in New Zealand. I attended the
Triennial Rally of The BUTLER Society in Kilkenny last Sept. There were
BUTLERs from New Zealand and they have a NZ BUTLER Society, same with
Australia, So. Africa, North America--even Germany (von BUTTLAR). You might
Fax Melo Lennox-Conyngham, Secretary, The BUTLER Society: Fax No.
0113535621545 She can put you in touch with the New Zealand BUTLER
Society. Someone in Auckland may have info.
Did you write that your G-G-G-Grandfather landed in NZ in 1887? My mother
was born in that year. Her G-G-Grandson is less than 1 year old!!!
