Subject: [BUTLER-L] All I know about the Butler Society
Date: Sat, 23 Jan 1999 18:20:49 EST
To the many of you have have asked about the Butler Society, this is what I
know. I have been a member since the early '80s, and attended one of their
triennial gatherings in Kilkenny, Ireland (in 1989).
The Butler Society has a quarterly newsletter which frequently contains
interesting articles, as well as a genealogy "corner". The International
Butler Society (to which the North American branch belongs) holds a
"gathering" every three years (at least). It has been held in many countries,
but is frequently held at Kilkenny, Ireland, the seat of the Irish branch of
the family. The Society also has an ever-expanding list of publications
(books, panphlets, etc.) which you can order ... many of these are not
available anywhere else. If any of you are a descendants of the Thomas Butler
who was born in Coolkenna, Ireland, in 1720, and immigrated to Pennsylvania in
1748, whose famous sons were known as "The Fighting Butlers" (all were
officers in the Revolutionary Army) ... then you and I are cousins. The
Society has an excellent booklet written by Richard C. Plater called, "A Thing
Well Done", which gives much info about this family. The title comes from a
quote by General Lafayette who said, "If I wanted a thing well done, I ordered
a Butler to do it." The Society does not directly assist in genealogical
research, but provides a wealth of information and connections concerning all
branches of the prolific Butlers.
