According to my documentation, Theobald Fitz-Walter was granted the
commission of Boteillier (literally, bottler - the rulers of England
spoke French in those days, of course) by Henry II, in 1177, at least
partially in return for his help in subjecting parts of Ireland. The
commission can probably be likened to a franchise to supply wine to
England. Theobald's son, Theobald II, first took the name of Le
Botteiler or Butler in 1221. The Butler family had possession of
baronies in upper and lower Ormond and other lands in Ireland. Irish
records give a line of barons, earls, marquises and dukes of Ormond down
1708. Any Butler that can make a connection with this family has a rich
source of genealogical material available.
