Hi Linda and the Butler List,

My Butler family has become very confusing since the release of Judge
Butler's book, but here's what I have in my files about Tempie:
Temperance O. "Tempie" Butler
born February 07, 1827 or 1821. She died April 06, 1854 ("History of
Carroll Co., TN, Volume I 1987," an article about William S. Butler.)
I have Tempie as the daughter of Nathaniel Cornelius "Neely" Butler (son of
Elias Butler) and Amy Arina Ozier. (???)
William Sullivan Butler, b. February 07, 1820, Montgomery Co., NC
died January 20, 1902, Carroll Co., TN.
William was the son of Thomas Butler 1792-1867 and Lavinia.
Marriage date for Tempie and William is December 21, 1842 (Carroll Co.
Marriages, Vol. 1).
Their children:
Dany A. Butler, b. October 22, 1844
John Riley Butler, January 29, 1846
Phillip Thompson Butler, January 06, 1848
Parthinia Jane Butler, July 06, 1850
Levinie Caroline "Viney" Butler, April 08, 1853

Source for names, dates of Temperance, William S. and their children was from
information recorded in a Bible owned by Bessie and Kate Williams.

The following statement was included in the Bible:
"1854. Mother died and a grate lite was seen in the Elements that knite."
Elements or no, Temperance has a homemade stone placed over her grave in
Birdwell Cemetery with the date 1925 on it. (obviously the date could have
been misread).

Four months after Tempie's death, William married Lydia Uptygrove.

I don't have the children of Elias F. Butler and Clarrah Clark. Judge
Butler's book indicates that Elias F. was married to Elizabeth Carroll.
Prof. Allen stated that Elias F. was married to Elizabeth Brigham.
Penergraft referred to him as Thomas Elias Butler rather than Elias F.
Butler. Judge Butler's book doesn't have Elias F.'s children listed.

To further confuse matters, Judge Butler's book lists Temperance O. McCord
(not Butler!) as the wife of William Solomon Butler, son of Neely Butler.
Showing her birthday as Feb. 7, 1821, her death on April 6, 1854 and her
marriage on Aug 8, 1843 in Carroll Co., TN. The children and dates he lists
are the same as above.

I believe there is also still much confusion about William Sullivan Butler,
William Sutton Butler and William Solomon Butler.

James Dawon is not listed in my files or Judge Butler's book. Could this be
an entirely different "Tempie" that you're searching?????? I don't have
another Temperance in my files, nor is there another one is the Judge's book.

You'll have to check this out before etching it in stone (so to speak), but
this is what I have at the moment. Hope it helps, rather than confusing even
more. Yeah, right :)

John Franklin and wife Phoebe have Martha b abt 1814, and Judith abt 1817,
so maybe Temperance fits in here, or:

Elias F and Clarra Clark m abot 1814. I don't have any of their children.
But Temperance could surely fit here also.

Do any of you have Elias F's children?
