Jeff,
I've been looking for Joseph and Elizabeth Butler from Co. Carlow,
Ireland ca 1790 who
settled first in NY, according to family tradition.
They had no Abijah, so far as I know. They
did have Jeremiah b1795 NY, Joseph b 1799
NY, Margaret b 1805 NY and Benjamin b 1811 NY. They eventually settled
in Nicholas Co. VA
by 1825. Descendants are still there today.
Back then, the states of Vermont and New York were having a boundary
dispute. You might
check border states for your Butlers. I've had
to do this in WV. The people didn't move; the
county boundaries changed.
I haven't found my Butlers. Hope you find yours. Perhaps a tax list or
some obscure
record exists for you to find. Also, try your
historical societies.
I have a son, Jeffrey Butler Dobbs.
