My GGgrandfather Samuel Liberty Butler, and his family ended up grape
growers in Sonoma County, California. Samuel was born about 1817 in
Kentucky but judging by the birth places of his children, they moved
around a lot before emigrating to California in 1864.

Samuel Butler was married to Alcinda Clyman on 31 Dec 1839 in Danville,
IL. They had the following 7 children:

1) Thomas Bennett Butler, born in 1841 in Illinois, died 28 Nov 1905 in
Calistoga, CA. On 30 Nov 1877 in Santa Rosa, CA he married Eliza J.
Gregson (b: 1854, d: 1948) , and had at least 3 children born in
California: James T. Butler (b: 1878, d: 1927), George C. Butler (b: abt
1879), and Lavinia Pearl Butler (b: 1882, married Guy R. Robbins).

2) Almond Milton Butler, born about 1845 in Illinois.

3) Erastas A. Butler, born in 1846 in Arkansas, died 8 June 1930 in
Calistoga, CA. On 17 Sept 1874 in Santa Rosa, CA he married Mary J.
Miller (b: abt 1855, d: 22 Nov 1902) and had at least 4 children born in
California: Clara Butler (b: abt 1876), Ina Belle Butler (b: abt 1878),
James E. Butler (b: 1882, d: 1944), and Carl Guy Butler (b: 1885, d:
1964).

6) John Samuel Butler, born about 1856 in Missouri, married Elizabeth ??
(b: abt 1854 in Illinois) and had at least one child born in California:
Jesse Butler (b: abt 1879).

7) Lavina Ellen Butler, born 8 Nov 1858 in Missouri, died 21 June 1950 in
Santa Rosa CA. She married Cornelius Hudson in California.

Samuel Butler's first wife, Alcinda Clyman died in 1861 in Missouri. In
1862 in Livingston County, Missouri, he married his second wife, Prussia
Sutliff (b: 14 May 1836 in Ohio, d: 26 Nov 1908 in Sonoma County, CA).
They emigrated to Sonoma County, CA in 1864 and Samuel had 6 more
children there, all girls:

8) Eleanora Butler, born 1865 in Sonoma County, CA. On 11 Oct 1891 in
Santa Rosa, CA she married Charles H. Wilson.

9) Emmeline Butler, born 1867 in Sonoma County, CA. On 6 Jan 1892 in
Santa Rosa, CA she married Robert A. Spencer.

10) Rosa Belle Butler, born 1869 in Sonoma County, CA. On 14 Nov 1897 in
Santa Rosa, CA she married Ulysses G. Riddle.

11) Unknown Butler (female), born about 1872 in Sonoma County, CA, died
26 Dec 1872.

12) Lucinda Butler, born 2 April 1874 in Sonoma County, CA, died 9 July
1876.

13) America Butler (my G-grandmother), born 5 Oct 1877 in Santa Rosa, CA,
died 1931 in Orange, CA. On 3 Oct 1893 she married Oscar William
Peterson (b: 5 June 1876 in St. Paul, MN, d: 1937 in Stockton, CA) and
had 5 children born in California: Evelyn Peterson (b: 15 Nov 1900, d:
May 1987 in Longview, TX), Oscar Raymond Peterson (b: 21 Mar 1902 in San
Francisco, d: 29 July 1957 in Lonview, TX), Howard Peterson (b: 27 Jun
1906, d: 18 May 1999 in San Leandro, CA). Edna Peterson (b: 28 Mar 1908,
d: 15 Aug 1998 in Chico, CA), and Robert Peterson (b: 1916).

There may have been another son born to Samuel and Prussia Butler, a
Charles C. Butler, born in 1863 possibly on their trip from Missouri to
California. But I'm not too sure about that one.

Samuel Liberty Butler is my "brick wall". I don't know who his parents
or siblings were.
