All we know is that he married in Mono Mills, Ontario, Canada in 1863 to Martha Sims (Scotland). He went into the Connecticut Cavalry through Niagra, NY. All his civil war papers that he filled out when he went into the war say that he was born in 1833. But then his discharge papers say he was born in 1841. He had his fingers shot off at the end of the war and so he went to a hospital in Virginia. The war department said he deserted before the war was over. He said he was in the hospital. It took many years later for him to get his pension. Family folklore is that after the war he never went home for 4 years. Supposedly Martha thought he was dead, married someone else, had a son, and then Thomas came home. Supposedly she annulled the marriage and went back with Thomas. During those four years that he was away after the war, family talk is that he went to the gold mines in the Dakotas. This may not be the truth because on his some of his war papers he was asked wh!
at he had been doing since the war. He said that he had spend one year in Oceana Co., one year by Port Huron and then two years here and there. While in the Port Huron area, he lived close to where Sue Gleason's Butlers lived and she has a John Butler that is the right age to be a brother. I just can't find a link yet.
