Benjamin Balch (1628-1714) was one of the first , if not the first, male
child born in Salem, MA. He was a bit of a non-conformist as he refused
to have his children baptized until they chose to have this done. No
doubt this led to severe criticism for Ben. Later on, he gave food & a
night's lodging to a lost & hungry stranger even though he was aware of
a law prohibiting such acts. For this transgression, he was arrested,
convicted, & fined. Served him right, I say !! Perhaps this was the
origin of the saying "No good deed shall remain unpunished". - Bev

You second Benjamin fits in nicely, although I think there were a couple of
children born in Salem right after arrival, and I am sure many were born in
the 8 years prior to his birth.
