SALT LAKE CITY, April 15 - Shots were fired Thursday morning at the Mormon
Church's Family History Library. Reports say at least three people were
injured. Salt Lake police Lieutenant Phil Kirk said a suspect was still
inside the building. Local radio reports said, however, two suspects may be
involved.
"WE'RE STILL trying to bring bodies out," Kirk said.
The library is west and directly across the street from Temple
Square, site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' Salt Lake
Temple and Tabernacle.
MSNBC producer Mike Stuckey was at the center when the shooting broke
out. Local radio, he said, reported that at least four victims were taken
from the building and that police were hunting for two suspects, still at
large.
"I was walking to the temple and saw people get down behind cars," he
said. "I thought it odd, that maybe they were looking for stuff. Then,
suddenly, they yelled at the crowd and push them back up the street.
"My first impression was it was a protest. But the police were
yelling, "Get out of the way, quickly." And I saw an officer pull an elderly
woman out of the building and shoo her away."
A church spokesman had no additional details.
