Theives steal valuables damage 15 vaults in Baptist La. Cemetery.
Graverobbers took jewelry from at least one corpse and damaged 15 tombs at a
small rural cemetery in apparent robbery attempts Tuesday, a Tangipahoa
Parish Sheriffs " spokeswoman said.
"It was horrible" said said Shirley Williams ,63, of Hammond, whose
fathers tomb was uncovered. My daddy died of lung cancer . When you bury
somebody and their resting place is damaged it,s like going through it all
over again.
Relatives of people entombed at Gatlin Cemetery expressed disbeliefat
the damage, which included four opened above-ground stone vaults and more
than a dozen chipped vault covers.
The 100 graves at Gatlin cemetery contain relatives of the Gatlin
family and residents of the Baptist area, said Burleigh Soape, a distant
relative of the cemetery's founder.
Ater Nellie Addisons' relatives confirmed that her watch ring and
necklace were missing Wednesdy evening detectives began checking other
graves to determine whether they were ransacked, Giannoble said.
Crime stoppers of Tangipahoa Parish is offering a reward of up to
$1000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the parties
responsible.
Giannoble said institutional vndalism carries a penealty of between
six months and ten years in jail and up to $10,000 fine depending on the
cost of the damage. Desecration of graves carries a fine of up to $500 and
up to six months in jail.
