Jan,
I think you may find the series that will be coming out on the History
Channel shortly about our Founding Fathers interesting. According to the
previews, James Madison was the "Bill Gates" of his day, and John Adams could
have used some Prozac. I also know that the great revolt against "taxation
without representation" was a big smokescreen - the taxes were miniscule -
the tea tax only adding up to a few cents a year. Yes, the royalty of
Britain was corrupt and perhaps feeble-minded at times, but I think you could
find a great deal of corruption and selfishness on this side of the Atlantic,
also.
Also, we didn't "whip" the British - they had enough of 8 years fighting
thousands of miles from home, and then having to deal with the French
entering the war on our side, as well as fighting them in the West Indies &
Europe. As it turned out, we remained a valuable trading partner w/ Britain
after the Revolution, and they were able to reap the benefits of our products
without the responsibility of governing us! Probably a good move on their
part.
Finally, let's remember that almost all the the "Rebel Patriots" were
related to the British by blood - plenty of those feeble genes ended up here,
I'm sure! :-)
Take care and have a good 4th!
Kathy
