<< I think you may find the series that will be coming out on the History
Channel shortly about our Founding Fathers interesting. According to the
previews, James Madison was the "Bill Gates" of his day, and John Adams
could
have used some Prozac. I also know that the great revolt against "taxation
without representation" was a big smokescreen - the taxes were miniscule -
the tea tax only adding up to a few cents a year. >>
According to a program on PBS, for the past couple of weeks, the whole
reasons for the Revolution were cause by gross misunderstanding of and
misrepresenting of fact to King George III by Parliment. I guess they needed
some excitement, they got it, not the kind they wanted.
About the British not being defeated, right in most major battles they were
not, however they did get out flanked by snipers and Indian style fighting
that the Colonists had learned by fighting the Indians. This was one of the
most demoralizing things that could have happened. Yes, the British were
constantly screeching about fair play. Could this be one of the origins of
the statement "All's fair in Love and War?" The situation surely fit.
BTW, I have ancestors on both sides, documented by pension applications.
