"The Pony Club" was started in England and is an organization of Juniors --
(under 21) that ride horses -- most do own their own. It has an absolutely
wonderful way of teaching the Juniors -- self reliance, responsibility,
caring for others etc. I was the head of a Pony Club (can't remember the
title) for two years and had three children involved in the organization.
Instruction is given in riding, care of the horse, care of tack (equipment).
There are "Rallies" (competitions) on all levels - A, B, C and D. The great
thing about the competitions is no parent or adults are allowed in the
stable area --- the juniors must do it all on their own as a team, relying
on each other -- feed, clean stalls, horses and tact -- ready themselves
for competition all with the help of their team mates with no outside help
or interference. Some are one day Rallies -- lower levels to three day local
and 5 day national in the B and A levels. When you see a Senior in high
school tell her date she can't go out that Friday night but he is welcome to
come help her clean tact as she has a Rally in the morning you know she has
learned responsibility. The saying was there are two kinds of clean --
others and Pony Club clean. I can not say enough about the organization.
My 45 year old daughter still competes and was shocked to find other do not
take a bridle apart to clean it -- what is learned sticks with the members.
