Question from an ingenue -

My maternal grandfather listed on his 1918 wedding cert. his occupation as
Sub. Lieut. in the RNVR - I am assuming it is Sub Lieutenant, Royal Navy
Volunteer Reserves, my question is what does that mean, and why would
someone be a "volunteer reserve" during the end of the war, and not a
regular conscript. He would have been about 20 at this time.

At his death in 1944 he was listed as Paymaster Lieutenent, R.N.R. - not a
volunteer now! married at the end of one war, died during another, how do I
go about checking out his service records. I believe that between the wars
he was a Merchantile Marine Clerk and a Clerk (shipping) - more details on
those careers would be welcome.

Thanks in anticipation
