Have recently received a birth certificate which has me puzzled as to the county.

It is headed up -

Registration District of Bradford
Sub-district of Bradford in the Counties of Wilts and Somerset

Would somebody be able to advise me - I thought Wiltshire and Somerset were 2 separate counties or where they one in 1849.

For anybody interested the certificate is the birth of MARTHA COLLINGS born 12 May 1849 at Stoke in the Parish of Bradford to JAMES COLLINGS and VIRTUE COLLINGS (SPARKS)

I know somebody will have the answer
