Hi folks,
There has been a lot of discussion re children migrating either abroad or
internally in search of work. It should be noted that a similar process
still occurs today.
In my Grand-father's day many farms would employ 5 or 6 men, in my father's
day they often employed 2 or 3 men, today they are often run by the farmer
and his wife. Over the last few generations many working people have been
forced to find employment in the larger towns, I have only ever had a job
here in Bruton for a few weeks other than that I have had to look outside of
the town for work. In the mean time many of the agricultural dwellings
including farms have been bought by retired or semi-retired people from the
cities who find that our housing (although expensive to those employed
locally) are cheaper than city homes, which means less housing for locals
who move to look for jobs.
The above may seem political but does give an outline of why people move and
that a 100 year old process still continues.
