Hello Anne,
It depends on which church they belonged to (if any), I would imagine. I
DO know that the Church of England forbade marriage between a man and his
deceased wife's sister until well into the mid to late 1900's. It has been
changed now.
I don't think there was any legal reason why the marriage couldn't take
place, just the religious one. Personally, I could never work that one out,
as the only relationship was by marriage, not blood, anyway. he could have
just as well married the other sister instead of the one he chose in the
first place!!
