The demolition of St James' Square was one of those planning decisions that has
been deplored both at the time and by more recent architectural 'authorities'.The
square did receive some bomb damage, but nothing to warrant its being obliterated.

Well the reason was that Bristol 'had to have an inner circuit road' and government
funds were available. To quote the authors of a book on the growth of public protest
the Bristol planners 'displayed an almost total lack of sensitivity to the older fabric of
the city' The last part of the square was demolished in 1967-9.

The Spirit of Bristol is by Paul Mount and was offered to another ciity first, but as they
didn't want it, they declined the offer. Presumably it wasn't called Spirit of Bristol
until Bristol accepted it.
