I think I'm losing mail messages, I don't recall the tree story that
Dominick answers. In any case, Dominick wrote:

When did this happen?
I do recall a story about a woman who was sitting in a parked car,
in the passenger seat, who spilled MacDonald's coffee on herself,
and MacDonald's got hit with large punitives (equal to a day's
profit on coffee sales, IIRC) because they'd had many complaints
in the past that their coffee was too hot. Had the coffee been
as hot as most coffee the burns would not have as severe.
Here is some data I've collected on coffee:
Calibrated the thermometer: suspended in boiling water reads 208,
resting on the bottom of the pan (rolling boil) reads 216.
Local donut shop "Dough C Donuts" Black coffee 170, regular 155
(and their coffee always feels too hot)
My kitchen tap (and I run the water hot, since it gives out
during baths) 160
Water out of our "Instant Hot" 180
Cup of coffee made with filter cone from that: 160
After I add milk: 136
I'd like to have data on the temperature of coffee served at
other commercial establishments.
ObBronx: It's pronounced cawfee.
