Call it a trolley good show

There's only one Bronx trolley, but it's riding two tracks this winter.

The Bronx Tour Trolley, which has offered free weekend rides to the New
York Botanical Garden, the
Bronx Zoo and the Belmont Italian dining and shopping strip since last
fall, is adding evening trips and
new stops along its route for the holidays.

The trolley - actually a red bus that is a replica of a vintage model
trolley - will also be used for a
monthly cultural tour, with stops at Bronx performance and art venues.

The goal of both routes is to make a day - or night - out easier for
Bronxites and visitors to the borough.

The Bronx Culture Trolley will take riders on a free tour of the
borough's artistic side every first
Wednesday of the month between February and May.

"It's a way to change the image of the South Bronx," said Bill Aguado,
executive director of the Bronx
Council on the Arts, which organized the arts tour. "There are a lot of
positive things going on here in
the cultural arena. There's a real energy here."

The cultural tour made its first round trip Wednesday night starting at
the Hostos Center for Arts and
Culture on the Grand Concourse at 149th St. The trolley's stops
included The Bronx Museum of the
Arts for a preview of a new exhibit, "The Gift," The "G" Bar for a
poetry reading by Bronx poets, and the
Pregones Theater Company for a reading of a new play being developed
there.

Always changing

Aguado said they will continue adding stops to the tour, such as
artists' studios in Mott Haven, and that
the performances and exhibits at each venue will change each month.

The trolley to the zoo and botanical garden will make its rounds seven
nights a week from Dec. 16 to
Jan. 6, and can now be picked up on weekend nights as well as days. The
famed Arthur Ave. Italian
dining and shopping street in Belmont also has been added to the
trolley's stops.

"For the first time, we have a transportation link between the garden,
the zoo and the Belmont section
of the Bronx," said John Rorer, vice president of The New York
Botanical Garden. "So families can
come, park their cars and enjoy all these attractions."

Riders on either route can get on and off the trolley at any designated
stop and are free to skip stops if
they wish.
