Welcome to Christine Mladen and Lee Babbitt who have joined this week,
and welcome back to Martyn Taylor and Mary Hamilton.

Thanks to Bill and Colin for their postings on past elections in
Rothesay.

Thanks also to Madeleine, and Bill (again) for their items on the Bute
Police. Quite an informative week.

Christine asked about ships and their owners -
"Clyde Passenger Steamers from 1812 to 1901" by Captain James
Williamson published by MacLehose in 1904, has an appendix listing all
steamers put into coastal service in that period. For the 309
steamers, it lists the year they were put into service, then for most
it also has the Shipbuilder, the Engine Maker, the original owner(s),
master and route, as well as technical details on dimensions and
machinery.

I have put some of this up on a new web page at
http:/cookfmly.rootsweb.com/cps_list/
There are 173 out of the 309 done so far which covers 1812 to
1851(part), BUT it only has the names - none of the technical details.
Look up requests for specific vessels or people for the remaining
period 1851 to 1901 with subject "Clyde Steamers" should be sent OFF
list, thanks.

Directories are another source for Shipping information - Archive CD
Books "Directory of Scotland 1825" (reviewed in #123) has a section on
shipping, at the end of the trades entries for each town that had a
steamer or sailing boat service. Gives vessel name(s) and timetable.

Finally for descriptions of the routes themselves in 1835, go to
http:/cookfmly.rootsweb.com/mcphun1835/

GATEWAYED POSTS
I have had an off list request to turn off the Gateway. As the traffic
on both the Bute query board and to this list is generally light, I
have denied the request - the gateway will remain open (for the time
being).
