Welcome to Brian Dunn who has joined this week and welcome back to
Cathie Shelton.

If you haven't already contributed, we hope to hear from you soon.

Following up on a couple of issues raised this week ...

Re "Census Ages" - the 1841 census is the only one where banding was
required to be used for the adult ages. However there is evidence that
many of the enumerators in 1851 had previously done the 1841 census,
and stuck with the old rules for 1851 - conversely many householders
were aware of the old rules and rounded the ages themselves in 1851.
This leads to adjacent ED's in 1851 being collected and transcribed by
the old and new rules, and even in those ED's collected and
transcribed by the new rules, some households are still listed with
banded ages. Generally by 1861 everyone was following the new rules.
With the collection and transcribing process there is also the problem
of transcription errors - not just with ages but also more
frustratingly with the names !!!!

Re "Test" messages - as Bute the county is small, so ButeshireGenWeb-L
is a small list, consequently we quite often have quiet periods.

There is only really a need to check your subscription if you don't
get my weekly post, and the best way to do that is to try to
resubscribe - if you are on the list then you will be told, if not
then the resubscribe will work - either way you'll know you're back
with us.

For those who may not have seen this announcement by Scots Origins
(following their loss of the SRO Contract) ...

" Sighting service and Previous downloads available again on Scots
Origins (www.scotsorigins.com)

Sighting service

Origins.net (www.origins.net) is pleased to announce the Scots Origins
Sighting Service on Scots Origins (www.scotsorigins.com) is now back
up and running.

When the service was launched in September 2002, we received a far
greater number of sighting requests than we had anticipated, and
neither ourselves nor the researchers in Edinburgh were able to fulfil
all orders within the 5 day stated period. We had therefore suspended
the service whilst we worked on improving the site so we wouldn't be
faced with another backlog of orders.

At present we are not taking requests for 1861 and 1871 Census
searches. You can, however, order details of entries in the old
parish registers and the statutory registers for Scotland of births
and marriages from 1700 up to 1990 and deaths from 1855 to 1990.

Each search undertaken is charged at £8 (approx $12 USD). There is a
minimum search fee of £4, and where an order can't be fulfilled
because the requested record cannot be found, a refund will be issued
for £4.

If full details of a search are not known, you can request a quote
(usually between £8/$12USD -£30/$46) and then decide if you wish the
name to be researched, knowing beforehand how long you will have to
wait until they receive the transcription details. We are now
estimating that all accepted searches will be completed within 10
days. For more details about the sighting service, please go to:

Previous Downloads

By agreement with the General Register Office for Scotland, the
Previous Downloads Service is available again for a limited period.
The Previous Downloads Service will be available until 21st January
2003 (to midday GMT). Users who wish to have continued access to their
downloads for personal use only, are advised to copy these onto their
computers.

For more information, please contact or visit
