I searched the 1920 index for Hugh Hughes in all states b. in Wales
between 1840-1850 (70-80 yrs old). I came up with three and all had
Welsh parents.

In California....Hugh Hughes b. abt 1840 (70 yrs old), single,
immigrated 1869 NA 1875 .

In Minnesota....Hugh J. Hughes b. abt 1847 (73 yrs old), widowed,
immigrated 1857 NA 1860. Daughter Ethel M. 29 single, son Lelsey L. 34
married, daughter-in-law Elsie E. 32 married, grandson Herbert L. 2.

In New York.....Hugh Hughes b. abt 1846 (74 yrs old), married,
immigrated 1851 NA 1855. Wife Eleanor M. 77.

While none of these fit exactly, the first one appears closest.....or he
may have already passed away by the 1920 census. Perhaps someone else
can search earlier census records.
