Are you talking about 1905-1929 CADI? There isn't a preCADI index. The
fire in 1906 destroyed most of the death, marriage and birth records prior
to 1905. Have you visited the FHC online catalog to see what is available
to order for vital statistics in San Francisco? There are a few reels of
deaths, I was lucky, my gggf's survived but most of the books are just the
indexes, not the actual records.

Suggest you see if you can find him in the census...here's a volunteer that
can check census indexes.....
