Continuing unabated in January the toll of traffic accidents which made a
shambles of Kern highways in December, two persons were killed last night in an
intersection crash near Shafter, a few hours after a similar collision sent
two Shafter brothers to Kern General Hospital in critical condition.
Dead today are Mrs. Howard A. Crawford of Shafter, instantly killed at 5
o'clock last night at the intersection of Beach and Riverside drives two miles
south of the town, and Sherman Appell, 54, 3335 Lakeshore drive, Oakland,
prominent bay district businessman. Mr. Appell died at 11 o'clock last night.
Mr. Crawford, 21, is suffering from head injury and severe shock. Mrs.
Crawford's body is at Janzen Funeral Home in Shafter. According to the California
Highway Patrol, the intersection was perfectly clear and no reason was
assigned for the crash.
