Do you know under what flag was the ship that he died on was sailing under, i.e. Britsh, U.S.A., for if he died on a ship there would be a report in their files.

I am trying to find the death record of Peter Hubert who I think died between 1920 and 1930. He is on the 1920 census as living at Elkhorn, San Joaquin, California. He was born in Guernsey in 1846 and went to America in the 1870's.
After visiting his family in Guernsey he died on board the ship while travelling back to California.
Could someone please tell me how I go about finding more information on when he died and where he would have been buried.
Any help would be much appreciated.
